WE ENTERED THE NEW COUNTY CAMPING COMPETITION , RUN FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR NEAR UCKFIELD. SCOUTLEADER PAUL BINNIE PICKS UP THE STORY...

As the chosen few of Ticehurst scouts prepared for an epic voyage of self discovery and enlightenment they entered the competition brave, fearless and excited. Our team comprised Hannah, Sophie, Callum, Fraser, Molly and the mighty Morgan. As they arrived at the campsite for the weekend “Let the competition begin!” I overheard one of our heroes say.

As they proceeded to set up their tents and lay out their boundaries the evening drew in, They laid out their plans for the following day.

On awakening they were busy as bee’s going to and fro making breakfast and getting ready for the adventure ahead. Then came their time with all of them working well as a team. They enter the gladiators arena of having to organize an event for roughly 30 people for about half an hour, h0aving seen before them mighty events from tossing the caber to water rockets and much more. After their event had concluded and certificate’s and awards issued. The concensus of their mighty water obstacle course event was a great success.

But after a long weekend our mighty heroines and hero’s were only just pipped out of the podium positions .But can still hold their heads up high for a phenomenal effort made one and all, even though they were robbed by....&*??*** (editor had to step in here!).

So congratulation’s to one and all who took part, also a big thank you for the support from the parents for whose without help these events could never run.

Thank you
Paul

County camping competition ethos

Like any competition the idea is to raise standards by good hearted competition. Chris Weller and John Cripps set out the rules for a 6 person team camping in traditional patrol tents, cooking on wood fires and providing their own entertainment.

Quality of camping was judged including layouts, tent pitching, organisation, food preparation and hygeine. Each team had to cater for a weekend camp with no help form leaders.

Curiously only Ashdown district teams were able to enter this year. Our verdict on the event - lots of room for improvement next year. Bring on more teams and judges
