A typical problem you are half way though building a bridge section and your rope is not long enough to make that last lashing work. You need a longer rope but the only spare rope is different to the one you have already wound around the staves. A sheet bend joins two ropes of different thicknesses together.

Step 1:
Make a loop in the thicker rope and grab it with one hand. This rope will do nothing else. Thread the thin rope through the loop

Step 2:

Wrap the thin rope around the back of the loop in the bigger rope.
