Heading for the hills was a great theme for our centenary spring camp. With the help of a great leadership team we were able to fill our timetable with a combination of sightseeing, hiking, climbing and the awsome rapids of the river Wye at Symonds Yat.

The week was especially successful in part due to the great attitude of our scouts who were up for everything and did us proud.

Amazingly more girls than boys took part in the week. Were our boy scouts wimps?

Jim and Paul led our intrepid heroes across the Wye in the kayaks loaned to us by Kent scouts. we did not have enough this time and so the balance were hired from Wyedean. (We need more kayaks now of our own)

It would be unfair to single anybody out since they all did so well in the water but it would be impossible not to mention the key role of Adam Hill in helping with safety boat cover through the rapids. Praise goes to the fearless Elliot, Francesca, Mattie and Callum who all ran the rapids on thier own. Elliot and Callum even did a spray deck test and escape in the middle of the river!

We climbed over 200m above the river for the rock climbing and abseiling parts of our adventure. Our scouts faced something completely new here, abseiling an overhang. Well done everyone that conquered this challenge.

The trip seemed all too short when we came home, leaving blue skies behind as well as hoards of bank holiday tourists. Yes we did get out at the right time. In fact we really felt like the place was only there for us during this week. We made new friends of the locals and our scouts were good ambassadors for Sussex.

The bunk house accomodation of Holly barn seemed unwelcoming at first, especially the sleeping areas. Once we got used to the layout its a place that I would stay again. the warm fires, spacious dining area and waking up to dry clothes in the morning made life easy. The facilities are good and the location great. Thanks to Jane and her family for putting up with us.
